Hakan Samuelsson, the chief executive of Volvo Cars, has warned that the premature launch of self-driving technology risks delaying "the best lifesaver in the history of the car", reports the FT. According to the paper's Peter Campbell, the Volvo CEO said it was "irresponsible" to put autonomous vehicles on the road if they were not sufficiently safe, because doing so would erode trust among the public and regulators.

The Guardian reports on moves by the European Union to require all new cars sold in the UK and Europe to be fitted with speed limiter devices as part of sweeping changes to vehicles safety rules. Mobility technology company Aptiv has announced the release of an open-source autonomous vehicle dataset that it hopes will help to solve a gap in the autonomous vehicle industry. Collected from the company’s operations in Boston and Singapore, nuScenes by Aptiv is organised into 1,000 ‘scenes’ that represent some of the most complex driving scenarios in each urban environment.
